Introduction:
This training course will cover the periodic inspection, test and maintenance requirements for Ex certified equipment. Participants will gain an in-depth knowledge of the requirements and the technical basis for these. It will address the requirements given in IEC standards in addition to manufacturers recommendations.
Outlines and Objectives:
1.Summary of area classification – explosion triangle, ignition sources, flammable liquids/gases. Outline the concept of zoning and the meaning of Zones 0, 1 and 2. Explain the various measures needed for areas classified as hazardous areas to reduce the risk level.
2.Explain the meaning of ‘Ex certified equipment’. Understand the different types of protection and how they reduce the risk of ignition. Consider this for different types of equipment. Explain the concept of ‘basis of safety’.
3.Brief overview of the technical standards – International Electro-Technical Commission, Institute of Petroleum, NFPA and others. Summarise the standards-based approach.
4.Study the content of IEC 60079-17.  Explain the difference between ‘inspection & test’ and ‘maintenance’. Teach participants the meaning of ‘detailed’, ‘close’ and ‘visual’ as well as the importance of correct intervals between inspection and maintenance.
5.Study in detail the requirements in IEC 60079-17 for different types of equipment. Provide worked examples of how this approached. Provide pictorial and video guidance. Ensure participants fully understand the tasks done during inspections such as checking glands, terminations, enclosure condition and earth bonding.
6.Provide some sample Ex equipment items and inspection sheets. Do practical demonstrations of inspection/test. Participants to do assignments.
7.Consider maintenance as a separate activity – based on manufacturers recommendations and industry standards. Explain how maintenance and inspection/test can be integrated into a single function.

Participant Assessments

a.Daily multiple-choice questionnaires (MCQ’s) will be done to test participants knowledge of the area covered.
b.Practical tests will be done to check participants understanding of inspection/testing on Ex equipment.
c.An end of course – based on MCQ’s – will be done on the final day.
